A Word from the Chairman
December 2011

Announcing a Recently-Realigned Board
The Board is back in shape. I continue as Chair. Huey Ward continues as Vice Chair. Dennis has agreed to be Treasurer. Barbara Fox has agreed to be Recording Secretary. Sally Bishop continues as Correspondence and Membership Secretary. And I will fill-in as Referee and Risk Manager until we secure our 2012 insurance policy. If you are interested in the Referee and Risk Manager board position, give me a call.

Soup Run January 15
Mark your calendars now for the January 15 Soup Run. begins at Grinder Deli and Catering, 1 W. Los Angeles Ave. in Moorpark. This kicks off our riding year and is a charity run for a local food bank. Entry fee is two cans of soup. The ride will end at a local park where SCMA's master chef Huey Ward will once again treat us to Cincinnati Chill done 3-way, 4-way or 5-way. Ride with us and share a little chili.

Do board members, event chairs and key volunteers get compensation?

This question has been asked a few times and I'm guessing unasked many times. The short answer is basically no. No one on the board or the committees gets any pay or special privilege. Everyone pays to attend events. Everyone pays for his/her own meals, own gas and own misc. expenses. There are a few exceptions. SCMA's adopted policy and practice is to pay for pre-ride fuel, pre-ride lodging, consumable office supplies and postage. Occasionally SCMA receives a few complimentary rooms from the Three Flags Classic start and finish hotels. When this happens, the on-site TFC committee members share those rooms. The Three Flags Classic Committee uses TFC funds to pay for a moderately priced dinner a month or two after the TFC is done. We do pay our web master and our newsletter graphics guy. And that's it. SCMA has been financially stable and has been able to sustain some of the Country's best-known long distance riding events by using the help and talent of uncompensated board members and volunteers.

We Have Signed Most of Our Ride Chairs for 2012. We Need a Grand Tour Chair

We are in good shape for 2012. Last month's call added two additional volunteers (Monica Short and Steve Howe) to the folks that will chair or co-chair our events. Here's the line-up:
1. January 15, Soup Run, Huey Ward
2. February 12, Sweetheart Ride, Dennis Even and Joel Briggs
3. March 3, Awards and Appreciation Banquet, Kenn and Phyllis Hatke
4. May 26-27, Blazing Saddles, Dennis Even and Dannie Fox
5. July 15, Dog Days of Summer, Monica Short
6. August 30-September 4, Three Flags Classic, Huey Ward
7. October 6-7, Grand Tour, Chair TBD
8. October 28, Cemetery Tour, Steve Howe
9. November 18, Turkey Run, Monica Short
10. All Year, California Adventures, Dennis Even and Greg Harris
11. All Year, USA Four Corners, In conversation

We need help with the Grand Tour. Duties include establishing starting and ending points, making arrangements for the over-night hotel, laying out a route, pre-riding it to confirm mileage and road conditions, creating the route sheet, and managing the event with help from others. Being a ride chair gives you an opportunity to contribute to this great association and create riding experiences for your fellow riders. Help us make 2012 the best riding calendar ever. Volunteer.
